The Big Unveil… Many of the remodeling/refurbishing shows that take a house or a car from a person, fix it while they are away and have a BIG UNVEIL This unveil moment when the curtain is pulled or eyes are allowed to be opened to see what work was being done behind the scenes. This feels like that kind of moment when I get to unveil something new at Friendship – First Wednesday!
What is First Wednesday?
Practically, it is a monthly mid-week gathering service on the First Wednesday of each month where we seek to realign our minds, hearts, affections, and ambitions to God. We do this first by sharing an unhurried meal together. We do this by singing more songs than we do during the weekend service because singing truth exalts God and stirs our affections for Him. We align from hearing from God’s Word. Finally, we spend dedicated time in prayer as a church for our people who are hurting or in crisis, for power to be His witnesses, and to seek His will and favor over the vision God has for Friendship.
Why do we need another service?
First Wednesday will be one of our thermostats, when we set our spiritual temperature to be white hot for God.
First Wednesday is family time to be together for a meal, in song, Word, and prayer.
First Wednesday is like charging your smartphone when the battery is low.
First Wednesday is immersing ourselves in God’s grace to be refreshed, reminded, and rejuvenated for all of Who God is for us as loving Father, gracious Savior, and ever-present Spirit.
Here are several reasons for making First Wednesday a priority:
We can move no further than we pray.
Last Month, the Holy Spirit impressed this thought upon me: ‘Everything you want to see happen at Friendship can’t happen without prayer.” I was humbled, convicted, and yet excited. However, the real question is not one of how to pray or when to pray, but do we really believe in prayer? Jesus did. The first churches in Acts did. Friendship, we must too! We want to experience God, and we want to see people healed, lives changed, souls saved, 1,000 connected to life in Christ … so let us pray!
We are leaky vessels and need regular re-fillings.
“The fact is, we are leaky vessels, and we have to keep right under the fountain all the time to keep full of Christ, and so have fresh supply.”
D.L. Moody
Our affections for God wane. We grow self-absorbed. We forget His blessings. Our joy grows dim. We forget about lost people and hurting people. We withdraw to our little worlds.
First Wednesday will seek to be that fountain.
Please mark and clear your calendars on the First Wednesday of each month and plan to be refreshed!
